With the specially developed software RENA (Rangewide Ecological Niche Analyses) frenquence curves of populated raster cells along climatic gradients are used to detect intervalls of clima values of areas to be populated. The algorithm for modeling is based on the multidimensional environmental niche concept. The algorithm is specially adapted to the high-resoluted global climate and range data. Hence hardly quantitative limits exist concerning range data as well as abiotic ecological data in terms of number of variables and their values.

The software allows to incorporate ranges as vectordata (shapefile) directly in the modelling process. The advantage is the possibility of seperated consideration of point-, areal and boundary-occurance. It exhibits a high potentail of further geo-information technology methods (spatial balance, intersection, buffering).

The modula design of the RENA software enables selection of range analysis and prediction by single steps or by complex algorithms.

An additional advantage of this program design is the individual and uncomplicated adaptivity in terms of particular demands as well as new findings. These may be merged to a hierarchically working analyse-model-combination successively.
